There was no hiding the disappointment from Karl Robinson yesterday as Oxford United’s excellent run was dented by a late Michael Kightly goal that gave Southend United a 1-0 win at Grenoble Road.
“We weren’t good enough and Southend stopped us playing” Karl told iFollow. “We became a team of tippy-tappy players, backwards and sideways, rather than if it doesn’t work ask a question of the opposition in behind them.
"We play with three up front but today the two wider players ended up playing in midfield and dropping too deep. That meant we were playing effectively with one striker and didn’t have an outlet.
“We have been lucky because we have been winning and your subs can come on and make sure you win it, rather than having to give you new impetus to go and chase a game to win it. The fans stayed with us all the way through, and I thank them for that, and now as one door closes another one opens and we have a big game here on Saturday at one o'clock against Bristol Rovers
“Even though we were below average we were never under pressure, then we gave the ball away through being sloppy, they broke and we got punished.
“I have to be honest we weren’t good enough and are all hurt tonight, but at this time of year you can’t let that affect you and we have to make sure we get ourselves ready for Saturday now.”
