Oxford United Women warmed up for their new season with an excellent 8-0 win over local rivals Swindon Town yesterday.
Captain Lauren Haynes set the tone with a header for the opener before Flo Fyfe, Emily Allen, Ellie Noble, two goals from Lauren Allison and a brace from Georgia Timms earned Liam Gilbert’s team a confidence-boosting victory on the eve of the new season.
“It was a very good performance” he told us. “The goals were a bonus but we look fit and sharp and ready to go.
“I think we are in good shape when you consider that we have had to rebuild this summer. One of the pleasing things was the number of players who chose to stay with us for the new season, and then we have recruited well and we also have lots of young players ready to step up. It’s a new league but we think we will be competitive and hopefully will do really well.
“We start at Chichester this weekend and then it’s a couple of weeks until the first home game. We had wonderful support in the WSL and we hope people come along and get behind us again this season. We will look to play entertaining football, and we can’t wait to get started in the league this weekend now.”
