Oxford United welcome Southend United on Saturday with boss Karl Robinson urging the fans to get behind his team once again.
United’s Head Coach was impressed not just by his players but also by the noise coming from the stands on Tuesday night, and now wants his team to recover from their injury time heartbreak and end a big week with a win.
“We’re still hurting, obviously, but we get on with it” he told iFollow. “That’s life. There are people with illnesses and bigger problems than football players who lose a match, so you have to keep a perspective on things. But we know we have a job to do for the fans who support this club with so much passion and love. We all woke up on Wednesday morning and carried on with another day, feeling fortunate to be able to come in and do something we love doing. Football can be cruel and sometimes you have to take that step back and see how fortunate you are.
“I am very proud of my players and of this football club. I am loving this, I really am. If I’m totally honest I have been surprised by the fans. I maybe didn’t realise the noise they can create. I thought coming here that only having three sides to the ground must mean you lose the atmosphere but standing there on the touchline I can see just how passionate the fans are and it’s really exciting to be playing in front of them and hearing that support.
“I think we are playing well too. On Tuesday it was the highest number of challenges won all season, which is big, it was 45 passes into the box, the highest number of crosses all season and we were in the top three in terms of possession that we have had all season. So all in all it was probably one of our biggest performances of the year. We have players coming back from injury as well so we are in a positive place right now.
“The fans have been brilliant and I am pleased we could put in a performance like that for them. But let’s go get a win on Saturday for them. I would probably have taken four points this week, especially with our goal difference. So let’s go out there, put in another performance and get that win we need.”
