A late equaliser from Gillingham denied Oxford United a win at Priestfield on Boxing Day but Manager Pep Clotet was pleased with the attitude and reaction from his players as they responded to a heavy defeat against Wigan on their previous outing.
“It showed how much we trust in what we are doing and trust in our football and in ourselves” he told iFollow. “We had a hard blow on Saturday and the most important thing was to get up from that and get back to competing, doing the right things and to putting in a strong away performance. I think the team did that despite not being able to get all three points.
“We needed a second goal to have a really good chance of winning the game but despite that I am really happy with the performance and the attitude from everyone.
“Gillingham chased the game and that will always happen. They were awarded a corner that was not a corner and then you find yourself with a draw instead of a win, but I think we managed alright because the conditions were not easy and after Saturday’s result it was not easy to play with confidence but I thought the team did that superbly.
“We were much more solid, the risks we took were more balanced and it is a good point that we can build from. Despite not winning I think everyone is very positive that we got back on track.”
