Wes bolsters attacking options for the U's at Roots Hall
Oxford United welcome Wes Thomas back into the squad on Tuesday night as they travel to Roots Hall to take on Southend United. Thomas missed Saturday’s draw with Charlton with a calf strain but trained today and is part of Michael Appleton’s plans as United look for a first away win of the season.
“Wes is available again and will travel with us as part of the 18, definitely” Michael told Yellow Player HD.
Appleton’s team are four games unbeaten, and a useful point in a tough game against Charlton kept the momentum going.
“I think the performance maybe justified more than a point on Saturday” he said “but provided we back it up with another good performance and hopefully three points on Tuesday night I think everyone will be happy with it.”
Southend suffered a 4-0 defeat at Northampton on Saturday, but that makes them dangerous opponents according to the Head Coach:
“Southend will be hurting but it’s a home game and they will want the crowd to be behind them. We just have to make sure we start well and don’t allow them to do that. If we can do that and get a foothold in the game it will certainly give us a better chance of getting the three points.
“It’s a tough ground to go to and people have been reminding me that it’s not been a great ground for Oxford United in recent years so that’s one thing we get a chance to put right.
“There won’t be massive changes. There are certain times when you can freshen things up and do things differently. I’m not sure if tomorrow night is one where we can do that but we certainly have other games coming up where we can. It is still the early part of the season and I expect the players to be quite fresh at the moment.”
