Reaction as Oxford United win at Barnet

Oxford United continued their promotion push with an assured 3-0 win at Barnet on Saturday. Two goals from Callum O’Dowda and a fine finish from Danny Hylton sealed United 12th away win of the season and left Head Coach Michael Appleton a happy man at The Hive.

“We knew we would have to deal with a lot of set plays and long throws but we spoke about being in the game after an hour, and to go into that last half hour 1-0 up gave everyone a boost of confidence” he told Yellow Player HD.” I thought in that last 30 minutes we took the game away from them and it might have been five or six.

“The defence were outstanding and they had to be. Not only did they cope with the ball into the area but we also had to be diligent to the second, third or fourth ball around our box. But we felt we could hit them on the counter attack if we were clever enough. We did it a few times in the first half without success but in the second it worked for us.”

The win gave United a six point gap over the chasing pack, but Michael’s message has been the same all season:

“Without boring anyone to death it is about what we do. I reminded the players of that after the game. It’s up to them.

“We have aims and have set goals for the season; short term ones over five games, some for ten games, 15 whatever. Ultimately we can’t control what happened elsewhere but if people want to slip up and draw  or lose games then that is ultimately only going to benefit us.”
