Development Side Beat QPR

Oxford United 4 QPR 1. Full report as Development side win

Oxford United’s young development side enjoyed a fine 4-1 win over QPR this afternoon at Northcourt Road. The U’s, with keeper Sam Slocombe the only player over 20, were full value for their win, with two goals from George Jeacock and further strikes from Josh Ashby and Aidan Hawtin.

United got off to a perfect start when a driving run from Sam Humphreys and good play from Hawtin and the impressive AJ George teed up Jeacock for a good finish after just seven minutes.

QPR hit back with a tenth minute equaliser but United had more urgency about their game and with a little more composure on the final ball would have restored their lead before the 44th minute when Ashby made it 2-1 with a magnificent free kick from the edge of the area that flew into the top right corner.

It was 3-1 on 52 when George dashed past two defenders inside the area and squared the ball for youth team top scorer Jeacock to strike the ball home and make it 3-1 with his second of the afternoon.

He might well have bagged a hat-trick but saw the visiting keeper make a good save when one on one, but on 70 it was the non-stop running of Hawtin that paid off as he raced clear of the QPR defence once more and finished neatly to make it 4-1.

Slocombe made two good saves to keep it at 4-1 while Hawtin and George had shots saved for United in the closing stages of an entertaining game.
