Phil Edwards Joins Oxford United

Right back joins on season long loan

Oxford United have completed the signing of right-back Phil Edwards on a season-long loan from Burton Albion.

The 30-year-old has been part of Burton’s rise into the Championship, playing over 100 times for the club and has amassed well over 300 senior appearances in a career that has also seen him play for Wigan, Accrington, Stevenage and Rochdale.

The move came after confirmation that summer signing Christian Ribeiro is likely to be out for three months with a fractured ankle, suffered in training the day before the season began.

Head Coach Michael Appleton said:

“Phil has bags of experience and as luck would have it I saw him play last week for  Burton and he did well. He knows his role, knows the game and we are really happy to have him here.

“It’s tough luck on Christian but he had an operation this week and it went well so he will be in a cast for a while. He is just as frustrated as we are but I’m sure will come back strongly.”

Phil said

“I found out about Oxford’s interest yesterday and to be honest it was an easy choice because they have been very impressive over the last couple of seasons. I spoke with Alex MacDonald and he said what a great club it was so I can’t wait to get started.”

Phil goes straight into the squad to play Peterborough at home on Saturday. Book tickets from www.oufctickets.co.uk or by calling 01865 337533
