5-1 win at Crawley sets up Saturday's home game against the Hatters
Oxford United welcome Luton Town to the Kassam Stadium on Saturday with Michael Appleton urging fans to get behind his side for a massive game.United thumped five goals past Crawley on Saturday and now have five huge games left to push for promotion. The second placed U’s take on the Hatters at the Kassam Stadium this weekend and Head Coach Appleton is pushing supporters to come and support his side at this crucial stage of the season:
“The fans were brilliant at Crawley and I have said all season that they have been absolutely magnificent. The more that we get into the Kassam the more opportunity it gives the players to win games because the atmosphere it generates is so positive” he said after the 5-1 win at Crawley. “If we are playing well, knocking it about and playing on the front foot with ten or eleven thousand people behind us then that gives us a massive advantage.”
United put in a storming second half performance on Saturday to edge four points clear of the team in fourth.
“Putting down a marker was one of the things we spoke about before; be professional, do the basics and get the simple things right” Michael told Yellow Player HD. “Defensively in the first half we were a little bit on the back foot for no reason whatsoever with throw ins and corners coming into our box, then Crawley got a goal and got their tails up and had something to defend.
“ I thought we were a little bit sloppy in the box in that first half. We passed on responsibility a couple of times rather than have a shot so I was a little bit animated in the dressing room at half time. I asked them to be a little bit more aggressive and ruthless and within five minutes in the second half we were 3-1 up.
"Their keeper had a good day for them and I think that says everything in a 5-1 scoreline; you usually say that in a 1-1 draw or something like that. We certainly put them to the sword in that second half and could have got more goals.”
Now is the time to get behind the U’s. Five to go, get behind United as we take on Luton. Tickets are available from 01865 337533 or by visiting www.oufctickets.co.uk
