Trophy win gives United a boost
Oxford United have had the perfect boost ahead of their Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Area Quarter Final at Dagenham & Redbridge tomorrow by winning the Team of the Second Round award.
Michael Appleton’s side notched an impressive 2-0 victory over near rivals and higher ranked Swindon Town to catch the eye of the judges and claim the Team of the Round prize.
Kemar Roofe scored both goals with a quickfire brace either side of half-time to secure a memorable victory for the home side and move them a step closer to Wembley.
As well as a trophy to mark their Team of the Round performance, Oxford have also been given a donation of Johnstone’s Paint to use on a club project which will be used on a number of projects to enhance the matchday experience for fans.
Oxford Head Coach Appleton said: “It was a fantastic night for us and a victory that the fans and everyone associated with the club really enjoyed.
“Kemar got the headlines for his two goals but it was a real team performance, which it needs to be when you defeat a side from a higher level.
“Hopefully we can use that result and performance to have a really strong run in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy this season because Wembley can come into view very quickly.”
The other teams shortlisted for the award were Sheffield United, for their 5-1 thumping of Notts County, and Wigan Athletic for twice coming from behind to edge out hosts Crewe Alexandra 3-2.
Richard Mazurkiewicz, marketing manager of Johnstone’s Paint, said: “The second round saw some very impressive performances and plenty of goals from teams looking to make a real impact in the competition.
“But Oxford’s local derby victory against a Swindon team playing in Sky Bet League 1 was the standout result and performance of the round and they are very worthy winners of the award.
“We congratulate Oxford on their success and hope their supply of Johnstone’s Paint is well received.”
Oxford follow Morecambe in winning the Team of the Round award this season.
The nearest Johnstone’s Decorating Centre to Oxford’s ground can be found on the Cowley Business Centre on Watlington Road (OX4 6NH).
