New defender joins the U's
Oxford United have completed the signing of versatile defender Cameron Gayle on a one month contract.
The 22-year-old from Birmingham has impressed on trial at the U’s and was signed in time to go straight into the squad for the game at Braintree Town in the FA Cup on Sunday.
Head Coach Michael Appleton knows all about Cameron, having coached him as a youngster at West Bromwich Albion. After turning pro with West Brom, Cameron had loan spells in Iceland and at Shrewsbury Town before joining Shrewsbury permanently in 2014.
Able to play in either full-back positions or at centre-half, he joins the U’s as a free agent after leaving the Shrews in the summer after 28 appearances in League Two last season.
Michael Appleton said:
“I know Cameron and what he can do. He has a bit of pace, he defends well and he can play all along the back line so that is going to be invaluable for us. He was in the same youth set up as Kemar Roofe at the Hawthorns and when we heard he was available we got him in to take a look.
“He has played three or four development games and trained with us for a few weeks. With this being such a busy time in the season he gets a chance to come in, push for a place and fulfill the potential that he has had ever since he was a youngster.”
