INTERVIEW: Sam Slocombe on Joining United

U's new stopper talks to us about joining Oxford

We ask United’s new goalkeeper, Sam Slocombe, about his decision to join Oxford United.

“It’s a lovely club,” he says. “I’ve been down a couple of times to meet the manager. He seems very ambitious, along with the staff, and he brings a good, positive feel about the place. I’ve been here and played two seasons ago and the fans were fantastic; you were riding high at the time and it was a good atmosphere to play in and I would expect that again.

“I spoke with Browny, the keeper-coach,” Sam continues, “and he spoke very highly of the club itself and how they finished the season last year. That just showed to me that they wanted to go places. I spoke with Michael Collins and he spoke very highly of the club so this was somewhere that I really wanted to come to because there’s the potential and the determination to take this club higher.

“My personal ambition is just getting as many games as I can. As for the club, it would be stupid not to be targeting promotion, especially with the form at the end of last season. It’s a good club to be around; the people inside are very friendly and very passionate about taking this club further up the leagues and hopefully we can do that.”

You can listen to the full interview right now in Yellow Player and, for something a bit different, hear Sam being interviewed by new #OX4Live members Ben and Daniel on the club’s official YouTube channel.
