Whing on The Mark as Development Side Win

Whing on the mark as U's beat Southend

United’s development side were 2-0 winners in a friendly against Southend United this afternoon. Goals from Andy Whing and a trialist gave the U’s a win in a game that saw several first team players get game time.

Whing’s goal came three minutes before the break as he reacted first to a spilled corner from the excellent Josh Ashby to poke the ball home at the near post. The midfielder had earlier gone close with a header  as United created the better chances in a well-contested first half.

The U’s then doubled their advantage on 51 when Chey Dunkley dinked the ball down the line for Ashby who slipped the ball across the box for James Roberts. He freed Will Hoskins in turn and the striker’s shot was helped over the line by one of two trialists in the United line up.

Southend tested Jamie Ashdown with a couple of shots from distance but the keeper looked very assured and with the likes of Dunkley, Jon Meades and Danny Rose all playing 90 minutes this was another excellent workout for all involved.
