Youngsters make it a Glovers Double for the U's
Oxford United’s Under 18 side matched the senior side with a win over Yeovil Town at the weekend. Goals from Malachi Napa, George Jeacock and Seth Humphries earned the young U’s a 3-2 win and Coach Leon Blackmore-Such told us:
"We set out well and settled, looking comfortable and moving the ball around. Then through no fault of our own we gave the ball away and went 1-0 down against the run of play. We maybe felt a little bit sorry for ourselves but we got ourselves back into the game with a goal from Malachi Napa who had scored two in the last two games and deserved his chance to start. It was a close range tap in from a cross by George Jeacock who was good again.
“From kick-off we tried to overplay in areas and got caught again and were 2-1 down despite having been the better team. We can’t keep doing that as it puts you under a lot of pressure. Again, we came straight back and were 2-2 at the break thanks to a great header from George Jeacock from a cross by Jordan Graham.
“We should have been in control of the game but instead were drawing so we said to pick up the energy in the second half and to be fair that’s what happened and we looked very bright. We got ourselves in the lead for the first time when Seth Humphries went forward and fired a good effort past the keeper to make it 3-2.
“The last 15 minutes saw Yeovil push it and come at us but we defended well and saw the game out. We were maybe under pressure in the last ten minutes but we defended ever so well and are doing well as a squad, scoring nine goals in three games, and if we can stop giving teams goals then we will do even better. It sets us up nicely for a cup game against Portsmouth on Tuesday.”
