Appleton Ready For Luton Test

Head Coach looks ahead to Kenilworth Road clash

Head Coach Michael Appleton takes his team to Kenilworth Road on Saturday looking to build on a five game unbeaten run. United have won plenty of plaudits for their football this season and are starting to turn that into points but Appleton knows that a trip to newly promoted Luton is a big test for his young side:

“It is going to be great” he told Yellow Player. “We will take about 1,000 fans and that will give our lads a boost. I am told there is a bit of needle in the game which will give it an edge and I don’t think we will see the free-flowing football that we played on Saturday. I think we will have to earn the right to play, but hopefully we win our battles and then when the game opens up later on we can play the sort of football that we have been playing recently.”

The United squad has gelled quickly after bringing in so many new faces right at the start of the season and there is a spirit which Appleton believes will be a massive help on Saturday:

“I think the spirit and camaraderie between the players here is first class and after a difficult first four games they have got the bit between their teeth and are determined to crack on now. Even those who haven’t been playing in matches have been first class with their attitude and that togetherness is what you need in any successful side.”

The U’s were boosted by Andy Whing and Ryan Clarke both playing in a Development Side win over Southend in midweek although Luton is likely to be slightly too early for the pair as they return from injury:

“Andy is a different to what we’ve got and that’s a sign of a good squad when you have different options and players who can cope with different situations” Michael said. “He will be a big part of the squad this year, as will Ryan. They can hopefully get another 90 minutes in another game next Tuesday and then we see where we are with both of them after that.”
