New contracts offered to James Constable and Jake Wright as United prepare for next season
Oxford United can confirm their retained list for next season.
After a sixth consecutive season as the club’s leading scorer striker James Constable has been offered a new deal when his contract ends this summer. The club has also taken up a contract option to extend captain Jake Wright’s deal by a further year.
Deane Smalley, Sean Rigg and Scott Davies have all been informed that they will not be offered new contracts at the club, while Wayne Brown will not be offered a further playing contract; both Wayne and the club will discuss a purely coaching role.
Loanees Ryan Williams, Nicky Wroe and David Connolly have all returned to their parent clubs.
Defender Tom Newey, the only other player out of contract, will meet with Head Coach Gary Waddock tomorrow. Gary said:
“It’s never an easy decision and we wish the lads who we have let go well in the future. At the same time we draw a line under last season, learn valuable lessons, and look to build a side capable of challenging next time.
“Both Jake Wright and James Constable have been tremendous servants to this club and want to enjoy success here. They have an opportunity to be part of the rebuilding and the exciting times that I believe lie ahead for Oxford United. ”
