Chris Wilder talks about United's defeat by Chesterfield
After United went down to their first league defeat of the season against Chesterfield on Saturday, manager Chris Wilder admitted that Oxford didn't deserve anything from the game. United went down 1-0 to the league leaders and afterwards Chris was honest with his assessment:
'We didn’t deserve anything from the game. We were well beaten even though we did have some chances late on and in the first half we had the two best chances of the game.
'But I thought they were a good side today and worked extremely hard for each other. We didn’t get close enough to them, we didn’t ask enough questions of them and we’ve not really done ourselves justice on a big day.
'I thought the crowd was excellent today and tried to move us forward, but we just didn’t have a spark about our play. When teams are on a roll like Chesterfield are and they’ve got a good side and their strong in all departments they find you out, and I think if we’d have got something from the game it wouldn’t have been deserved.'
United's cause suffered when captain Andy Whing was sent off for a late challenge. Chris felt that it was a harsh decision.
'I personally don’t think it was a red card because I think he made a genuine attempt to win the ball and the boy’s skipped past him. He’s not left the ground, it’s a sliding tackle, as I said to the referee afterwards. I’m not saying we have to injure the boy but he just got caught late and got up pretty much straight away.'
Chris was full of praise for the visitors, who maintained their four-point lead at the top of League 2.
'I thought they slowed the game down when they had to, speeded the game up when they had to, booted the ball away when they had to, they went down under challenges when they had to. So they’re a very good side and they’re a very street-wise side as well and maybe that’s what some of our players have to get into their game. But the overall game though wasn’t really affected, even late on. We might have nicked something but we wouldn’t have deserved it.'
