Youth Team Lose Out

Under 18s beaten at Bournemouth

United’s under 18s lost 1-0 to AFC Bournemouth in the League Cup on Saturday, meaning that they will not participate beyond the group stages.

The youth team created chances and did well against their Championship opponents but as Chris Allen told us, it was not quite enough:

“You know that Bournemouth will be good on the ball, play it about and technically be very accomplished, but we are a good side ourselves and needed to impose our own game a little bit. For the first 20 or 30 minutes we sat off and it took us too long to figure it out and get amongst them. We were 1-0 down by that stage after a well worked goal, and although we came back into the game we just couldn’t get level.

“We did open them up at times. Jamie Calvin put a left footed shot wide when well placed, Greg Hackett cut inside from the left, beat two defenders then hit his right-footed shot straight at the keeper, and Sam Humphreys worked a great opportunity on the edge of the box but missed the target.

“Looking back at it we had the better chances but we have lost two of our group games now and so won’t be going through. We have done OK in both games and learned one or two things about cup football, but this game was all about starting properly and not giving the opposition a head start.”
