Youth Team beat Cheltenham

Under 18s win again

United’s under 18s beat Cheltenham Town on Saturday but will not progress in the League Cup.

Having already lost to Hereford United and AFC Bournemouth in the group stages United knew they could not progress but another good display gave them a confidence boosting victory. Coach Chris Allen said:

“This was a good win. In the early stages we had a lot of possession but couldn’t pick anyone out or make the possession count. It was like the Bournemouth match in a lot of ways and we were choosing the wrong option with too many silly passes. As a result we found ourselves 1-0 down.

“If you were to split the first half down the middle then we were much the better side in the second of those periods. We looked after the ball much better and started to create chances because of that. We broke well on the left and James Roberts made a great 30-yard run to get in on goal. He finished well and we were back on level terms.

“Then Greg Hackett again did well on the left and cut inside on to his right foot for an in-swinging cross. Sam Humphreys made a great run to get in to the box from the other wing and he finished to make it 2-1.

“The second half was a bit scrappy. Cheltenham had a rollocking at half time and responded and went a bit more direct but we stood up to that well and defended strongly. We picked up the second ball most times and when we had possession we looked probably the more dangerous side.

“Another good win and now we go on to play Didcot in the FA Youth Cup on Wednesday. It is a local derby and one to enjoy. They will be up for it and we know how hard cup football can be so it is all set up nicely.”
