Chris Wilder speaks about the weekend's win over Coventry
After United’s 1-0 win over Coventry City, Chris Wilder shared his views with Yellow Player.
“It was a tough test. Coventry have got a lot of excellent players and they moved the ball about extremely well in the first half. We got to grips with it a little bit at half time and played a little bit further up the pitch, put a little bit of pressure on them and we got into the game a lot more.
“It’s been an excellent pre-season. It’s been well constructed, we’ve got a lot out of it and we’ve had two terrific games down here against tough opponents that I’m expecting both to do well next season and we’ve come through it, apart from Jon’s injury, with everyone available for next week.”
Chris was very pleased with the team performance, happy that it’s given him something of a selection headache:
“You want everyone to be knocking on the door and putting a case up for selection. Unfortunately I won’t be able to select more than 11 players on the day, but it’s not set in stone and we’ve another game three days afterwards at Charlton. It’s about the group and the mentality of that group is first class.”
The manager was especially pleased with the contribution of the young players, who grasped their opportunity.
“They’ve been excellent. We’ve got four or five players who are knocking on the door now and hopefully we’ve got a few that are waiting to knock on the door. It gives everybody a great deal of heart to see the young players doing well. As always they have to deserve the chance of going in and be good enough and they have and I think they can be well pleased with their performances pre-season. Now they need to show the consistency to keep knocking and if the chance pops up for them hopefully they’ll take it.”
