Roberts on the mark but under 18s beaten

United’s under 18 side went out of the League Cup with a 2-1 home defeat against Northampton Town. Another goal from top scorer James Roberts was little consolation for coach Chris Allen, who told us:

“It was one of those where we didn’t get started at all. There have been a couple of games this season where we started slowly and grew into the game but on Saturday it was one of those matches where too many players had off days. We hadn’t had a game for two weeks  since the Barnsley FA Cup tie, but that is no excuse. They have been training hard, training well and in a game they have to be able to make five yard passes or put three passes together and it didn’t happen on this occasion.

“We went a goal behind early on with a dipping shot, and then 2-0 down when a striker got in between the defence and the keeper. We came back and made it 2-1 through James Roberts but even without playing well we have had ample chances to score and get something out of the game

“We are out of that competition now and will look to make amends when we get back to a league game this weekend.”
