Chris Wilder on Rochdale

There was frustration all around as United went down 2-0 at Rochdale last night. The U’s played well over the 90 minutes but were undone by two late goals, leaving Manager Chris Wilder to reflect on what might have been.

“If we can’t put teams to bed then we don’t deserve to win the game” was Chris’s immediate reaction on the pitch with Yellow Player after the game. “We had more than enough of the game to win two games. That’s not to be disrespectful to the opposition but we dominated possession and dominated the chances, but all of the front four should have scored tonight. We then paid the price by getting caught by the sucker punch.

“I want us to go away and get what we deserve by playing well and being clinical in  both boxes, which we didn’t do. I don’t think the front four played anywhere near as well as they did on Saturday and we need to show a level of consistency. It wasn’t as up and down as it has been, but we should have used Saturday as a springboard to say ‘come on let’s go and get a result here’.

“Hopefully we have moved on from the Port Vale performance and the enthusiasm and work-rate were there to see, but we have players who possess  quality, we saw that on Saturday,  and if we show anything like that quality going forward then we would have come away as comfortable winners. But you get punished cruelly sometimes, and when those things happen then you just have to go again.”
