Oxford United was saddened to learn of the death of Colin Harrington just before Christmas at the age of 81.
Nicknamed Flash because of his speed, Bicester-born Colin joined United as an apprentice while they were still in the Southern League, having had a spell with Wolves’ youth team, and earned promotion to the seniors in 1962.
He scored 32 goals in 260 appearances for United, making his debut at Workington in April 1963 in the Fourth Division and going on to be a key figure in the side’s promotion to the Second Division in 1968.
He signed for Mansfield in 1971, before linking up with his former playing colleague Ron Atkinson, who took him to Kettering Town.
Colin leaves his wife, Kate, to whom we pass our condolences.
