Mackie Loving Life

There’s one man who we know will be keeping a keen eye on Saturday’s friendly against QPR more than most.

Striker Jamie Mackie hung up his boots this summer after a fantastic career that saw him become a huge favourite with the fans of both clubs. The Scottish international has taken a step back from the game, for now, but as he told us earlier today has no regrets about finally calling a day on his playing career.

“No, I’m telling you right now” he says “I knew it was the right decision when I made it and I absolutely stand by that after a a couple of months to reflect on it. It was all I knew and I loved every minute of being a footballer but I’d made my mind up before the play-offs I will miss football, or being a footballer, every day of my life but I have been so busy with other stuff over the summer and I am really enjoying how it has worked out.

“I am still really busy. I’ve been lucky enough to get a few media opportunities and that’s something that I would love to get in to. And I was asked to help mentor a few young players and pass on my experience to them. So many young footballers suddenly get a contract and a little bit of money and they don’t always get guidance. I was always sensible with things like that and it’s good to be able to talk to the lads and try to help.

“I had one or two offers to carry on playing but I’m not going to make a comeback. People maybe think because I loved playing the game, and fans could see it, that I want to carry on playing part time or in non league or whatever. That’s gone. I’ve got mates who are managers in non league but even if they were the Manager of Man United I wouldn’t go play for them now!

“Saturday will be very tough for me though because it’s two clubs I love and I’ll definitely miss being around the dressing room and being part of the team.

“Like the fans, I’d love to be there but I’ll do my best to come back when fans are allowed and see both teams because I have a lot of friends there still and I want them both to do well this season.”
