Young winger signs for the U's
Oxford United today completed the signing of 21-year-old winger Jonny Giles.
Jonny, from Windsor, has impressed on trial over the last two weeks and earned his first ever professional contract after his performances against Aston Villa and Southampton in development games. A left-sided winger, he completed a degree in physics at Durham University this summer before turning his full attention to football.
“I had played locally and been with Maidenhead as a youngster” he told us “ While at University I played for Durham and Ashington but things have obviously moved very quickly since then. I came In to train, did well in the games and now I have the opportunity to come to Oxford train full time and play for a great club as a professional.
“I fully appreciate that there is a lot to learn but I am determined to make the most of this chance and do all I can to reward the club for showing such faith in me.”
Head Coach Michael Appleton said:
“He is quick, he has ability on the ball and he has done really well in training so he deserves his chance. He is still very young but the club has a great record of bringing through youngsters like Jonny over the last few years and helping them to develop. We look forward to working with him and he looks to have a very bright future.”
