Whing and Connolly Return

Early team news as United head for Dagenham

Andy Whing and David Connolly stand by to return as United travel to Dagenham and Redbridge on Saturday. The pair starred in the home win over Hartlepool but weren’t risked at Southend on Monday night.

“Whingy had been out for a long time and after playing on Friday he had to come out of training on Sunday, so it wasn’t really fair to ask him to play on Monday but he is back in contention for the weekend,” Head Coach Gary Waddock told Yellow Player. “David Connolly as well. He is a good experienced pro and we talked on Sunday; he had one or two aches and bruises so we didn’t risk him but he will be available as well.”

Gary has had time to work with the players this week after being thrown in at the deep end at Roots Hall for his first game. He is full of praise for the response his players have shown after Monday:

“I would have liked the week to prepare for the first game but didn’t get that, but the players have been good in training this week and I’m looking forward to working with them, developing them and pushing them forward.

“I could see how much they were hurting in the dressing room after the game on Monday night. They are good players, good people, so now I am looking for a reaction going into the game on Saturday.”
United are without the suspended Tom Newey who serves the last of his three-game ban while Dave Kitson has an outside chance of a return after a slight hamstring problem:

“Dave has been working hard this week and we will see what his fitness levels are like come Saturday, or on Monday or Tuesday if he doesn’t make it for Dagenham.”
