Oxford United Women kick off the season at home on Sunday to Crawley Wasps (2pm KO). The U’s start their competitive matches in the FAWNL Cup after an unbeaten pre-season schedule over the summer.
The U’s women begin their campaign in the FAWNL Cup after their league opener against Keynsham Town was postponed last weekend.
It was a strong off-season campaign for the Women's side, who enjoyed an unbeaten run over the summer months. They started with a draw against London Bees before winning their remaining games against Southampton, Wolverhampton, Lewes and Abingdon United.
Speaking to iFollow, First Team Manager Liam Gilbert told us:
“It’s been a really good pre-season for the girls. Obviously the results don’t mean anything just yet, but the fact is that we’ve got that mentality to win games and we’ve had good performances. There’s definitely lots of positives to take.
“I’m really happy with the players we’ve brought in. Last season we looked at a few areas that we wanted to strengthen, and a few have turned up and blown our expectations away. It’s a really good environment.
“I’ve said to the girls that I think we’ve got a real special group here together and I think they sky is the limit. Whatever we set ourselves to I think we can achieve but it’s working week after week and game after game to make sure we work to towards that. We had a slow start last season but we know the league, we’ve got better foundations and we’ve got a much better squad – that’s not to do a disservice to anyone here last season – but I think we’ve strengthened all over the place and I’m really excited with what we can do.”
For visitors Crawley Wasps, Megan Stow was sent off last weekend but will be available due to her suspension starting next week.
