A brace from Flo Fyfe sealed a 2-0 victory for Oxford United Women away at C&K Basildon on Sunday.
Liam Gilbert’s side travelled to Canvey Island FC, home ground of C&K Basildon, and after almost half an hour of an even game a long range strike from Fyfe found the back of the net to make it 1-0 at the break, with Lucy Thomas making a good save to preserve the lead, helped by the covering Sophie Baker.
After a very competitive second half United had to wait until the last minute of stoppage time when another goal from Fyfe made it 2-0. A clean sheet and a victory for the Yellows was very welcome in an ever-tightening league table. Manager Gilbert told us:
“It’s been a long time since our last league game against Coventry United. We were delighted that the players stayed focused especially after how the game went last week, it can be easy to get complacent after a big win.
“The clean sheet is very pleasing for us as a management team as they are not easy to come by in this league. This was a good team win and we were able to demonstrate that we have learned from previous matches by seeing the game out in a professional manor.”
Two-goal Flo Fyfe told us
“We were coming off a big win in the previous game which gave us the confidence we’d needed after a few tough losses. However, we knew we couldn’t go into the game being complacent as C&K Basildon were a team that were getting closer to a win.
“We put in a solid team performance creating many more chances than we took and coming away with a clean sheet. We worked hard and pushed throughout the whole game which is reflected by scoring the second goal in the final few minutes. Hopefully this win can get us back off to winning ways in the league and we can take the buzz and confidence into next week’s game against Cardiff”
