Everyone at Oxford United was saddened to learn of the death of former goalkeeper Steve Hardwick on Monday, at the age of 68.
Steve joined United from Newcastle United in February 1983 and was a huge part of the club's success over the next three years. He was virtually an ever-present as the U's won the Third Division title in 1984 and the Second Division title the following year. He also played in the first half of the 1985/86 season and, after a loan spell with Crystal Palace, returned for the second part of the next season. Following a loan to Huddersfield, he then moved to Huddersfield Town for three years, eventually joining Hoylandswaine Cricket Club as a wicketkeeper and later groundsman.
Steve made 196 appearances for Oxford and will forever be remembered for his part in the club's stellar rise in the 1980s.
We pass on our condolences to Steve's family and friends.
