All at Oxford United were saddened to learn of the passing of former United player Rodney Smithson at the age of 80 years old.
Born in Leicester in October 1943, Smithson joined United from Arsenal in 1964 and went on to play 180 games for the U's, mainly as right-half, scoring six goals. He was instrumental in Oxford's promotion to the second tier in 1968. After leaving the U's, he went on to be player-manager for Witney Town.
He was granted a testimonial by United in May 1975.
