United will look to get back to winning ways on Saturday when they welcome Bristol Rovers to the Kassam Stadium.
Defeat at Cambridge hurt the U’s and striker Kyle Joseph summed up the mood in the camp after losing at the Abbey Stadium
“Everyone was devastated” he said “and we do realise it’s not good enough as a collective. It’s on us as players; we listen to tactics and gameplans but we then have to put them into action and graft and work hard as a team.
“I think the hard work has been there - look at Plymouth in the first half we showed heart and desire. We can go up against any team on our day. But we have to work together now to find what has been missing
“The group is together, one hundred percent. Off the pitch it is still the best environment I have been in, we get round each other and we are a tight-knit group. We have to be that on the pitch as well though. We can’t play as individuals, we have to be a team unit.
“We have not been good enough this season, we know that, but we have to remain positive. We are in a battle but we are ready to fight. Mentally we all have to be resilient but we can’t keep saying ‘we will get it right next time’ and just waiting for it to happen. We have to have a nastiness to us as a team, leave absolutely everything we have on the pitch. Training has had a real intensity this week, that’s the way it has to be. Have that will to win, do everything you can to win that game.
“You can have five subs play so that’s 16 players who can contribute on the pitch but it’s the whole group, whether you are playing or not who can contribute and help. Can we do that little bit extra, make that little bit of difference and get that win? There is nothing to fear, just take it upon yourself: the worst that can happen is you lose a game. Would you rather do that trying to make things happen, trying your absolute best? If you make a mistake or miss a chance then hold your hands up and go again. Don’t wait for things, go and make them happen yourself. That has to be the mentality on Saturday and in every game between now and the end of the season.”
