Oxford United will pick themseves up and go again when they travel to Charlton Athletic on New Year’s Day, determined to make amends after letting a 2-0 lead slip away against Derby County last night.
“We’ve got to learn from it” experienced defender Joe Bennett told iFollow after the Rams came back to win 3-2 at the Kassam Stadium.
“It was tough to take after we started so well, but we just invited pressure and at times weren’t good enough on the ball. To be fair, Derby are a good team but even so it was very disappointing to lose like that.
“I thought we were good in the first half. We set off really well with a goal in the first minute and then Cam scored an excellent free kick but I think when you score two goals so early you can sometimes naturally just drop off and that’s what we did.
“Conceding right on half time killed us. If we go in at 2-0 it’s a massive chance for us to get the result but that goal gave Derby a lot of confidence coming out for the second half and then we just weren’t good enough with the ball after the break.
"We could have trusted ourselves a bit more with the ball but instead we conceded a couple of sloppy goals. So now all we can do is go and win the next game.
“That’s what we aim to do. It’s only a couple of days away so we are disappointed to lose this one but there’s no time for sulking. There are a lot of games coming up so we pick ourselves up and we go and get a result in the next one now.”
