Defender Joe Bennett continued his progress with the U’s with a 45 minutes appearance at Reading on Tuesday night after a first appearance in the Trophy the previous week.
“I’m getting my fitness back having not played for a while” he told iFollow earlier today. “I played the two games and then hopefully I am building up to a start in the league. I have kept fit and am feeling good so I’m ready to play whenever the Manager needs me now.
“The atmosphere was good on Tuesday. The away fans were there in their thousands and it was great to see that before the game. It was a bit frustrating for all of us not to win. We had a lapse in concentration for their goal but otherwise I don’t think they created too much while we made a few chances ourselves. We just need to take those and on another day that will turn into three points, hopefully at home to Burton on Saturday.”
The experienced defender has been reunited with several former teammates at the U’s, including winger Josh Murphy, a partnership that Joe believes works well:
“I’m not gojng to get round him too often- he's too fast for that” he laughed. “But if I can support him and get the ball to him and get him one v one against a defender then he is so good in those situations so that’s the plan. We’ve played in the same team before many times and that does help.
“It’s all about helping the team. I’ve enjoyed it so far, feel settled in, and we are still in a great position, up there challenging in the league and with a home game to look forward to on Saturday.”
