Oxford United need to use the hurt they felt in losing at Northampton on Saturday to fuel a far stronger performance when they welcome Cambridge United to the Kassam Stadium on Boxing Day.
That’s the view of Des Buckingham who told iFollow:
“It certainly wasn’t the result we wanted but we had done enough to get a draw out of it and the game was heading for a draw. We created a few chances in the first half which we should have scored from and we managed to get ourselves back level quickly after we conceded but then it was a kick in the teeth to concede in the last minute
“Northampton had won four out of their last five so we knew it was going to be tough but you can’t give away so many free kicks and give them opportunities to get the ball into the box because eventually one of those will go in. Give teams too many chances to use set pieces they have worked on and have routines for and you can’t always rely on a defender winning the ball, so be disciplined and don’t give them that opportunity.
“Christmas is ruined for me. We had a sold out away end and I am as gutted as all of those fans are not to take a result away from here. Away games haven’t matched what we have done at home so far. But we have another sell out on Boxing Day now so we get home, we recover and we go full throttle against Cambridge and make sure we come away from that game with the best performance we have given all season and a positive result.”
