Promising young talent, Cecily Wellesley-Smith, has stepped up into Oxford United Women’s First Team for the 2023/24 season.
The 16-year-old centre half, who has represented England numerous times in the Youth systems, progressed through the club’s RTC and has been involved with Liam Gilbert’s squad during pre-season.
We caught up with Cecily to discuss how the step up has been:
“It's been very nice so far. Everyone's been very welcoming, and I'm excited for the season to start. It's definitely a step up in intensity and quality of all the players here, but I'm getting used to it and hopefully I can progress.
“I've been getting to know everyone, both on and off the pitch and it's been exciting. Liam has helped me throughout all my years at the club and it's been nice learning more from him in the last few weeks.
“It's a challenge, but it's an enjoyable one for sure and playing with and against some top quality players, it’s something that I'm going to have to get used to. It’s been a good experience and I hope to keep playing and doing well.
Cecily stepped up into the Development Squad last year and was part of the side that won the League and Cup double.
“Last year was an amazing, amazing season. It shows how good the pathway at the club is and all the coaches here help players to develop.
This summer, Cecily has been away with England U16s in Sweden for an international fixture camp.
“It's definitely very exciting playing in such a professional environment with England and all the coaches there are very good and have helped me develop throughout the year.
“It was nice going away with England and seeing different cultures and environments out there and they individually work with you and help you with your targets and goals to keep developing as a player.
“Hopefully this season I can just try and get minutes for the First Team and keep developing.
See Cecily and the rest of the squad in their final pre-season test away at Wolves Women this Sunday 13th August. Buy tickets HERE.
