Alex Dyer is Guest of Honour

Oxford United take on Charlton Athletic at the Kassam Stadium on Saturday and we are pleased to welcome back Alex Dyer as our Guest of Honour.

Alex had spells with both of Saturday’s clubs and told us

“I wasn’t getting a lot of game time at Crystal Palace under Terry Venables so when the opportunity to join Charlton came along I jumped at it, even though it meant moving down a division. I really enjoyed my time there. I played something like 90 games and scored a few goals too. They played good football, and it really suited me, but after a couple of years there I got released and Brian Horton came to the rescue!

“He knew I was a free agent and so he brought me to Oxford, where I played alongside the likes of Jim Magilton and Matty Elliott and, of course, Joey Beauchamp.

“Brian wasn’t actually there for long after I joined, as he was taken on by Manchester City. It was obviously quite a surprising move, but he did really well there. Denis Smith took over at Oxford and built a really good squad. I played quite a few games in my two years there and scored a few goals too. I think one of my best games was away at Leicester in the FA Cup; we won 3-2 and I scored, but the Oxford following that day was something special.

“I think I had quite a good rapport with the fans; they seemed to like me for some reason, and I remember them chanting my name to the Kumbaya tune!”

After a spell coaching in Greece Alex is now back in this country and looking for the next chapter in a life spent in football.

“I’m back in south London again and now we’re just waiting for an opportunity. I’ve put my name out there and I’m confident that something will come up soon.

“I’m looking forward to Saturday and seeing some familiar faces on both sides. I enjoyed my time at both clubs and the way they are going it should be a really good game.”

Make Alex feel welcome as he is reunited with the fans at half time when he will be making the Polythene UK Fifty/50 draw. And read his full fascinating story in the Match Programme.
