Last Word: Young U’s on Women’s Silverware Sunday

Oxford United Women took home two trophies yesterday, as the Development Squad won the FAWNL Reserve League Cup Final before the Oxfordshire FA County Cup was won at Court Place Farm.

Both victories highlighted the wealth of talent that the U’s have coming through the Regional Talent Centre (RTC), with graduates making their impact in both wins.

The Development Squad won 4-2 on penalties after a dramatic 2-2 draw with West Bromwich Albion, RTC graduate Caitlin Crierie saving two spot kicks to win the clash.

Cheyenne Flynn, another who has come through the pathway, was momentous at centre half all afternoon

“The girls zoned in to our own game, ignored the fact it was a cup final and there were quite a few fans here. Everyone put in such a good shift.

“I’ve never been in a team that’s been so close together. I think to be able to take the lead and then still come back from going 2-1 down and take the win on penalties is incredible. There’s not much more you can ask for in a final!

“All the youngsters that have come in this season have been incredible and it shows the growth in the club as a whole, but in woman’s football in general as well.

Back in Oxford, youngster Jess Gray captained United to County Cup Victory over East Oxford Ladies.

“It’s been such a successful day for the club as a whole. Two trophies in a day is a special experience. It’s been a tough season and we’ve all put such hard work in across both teams.

“One of my strongest qualities is my leadership, so I’m really happy that I can share that when I feel confident. I’m really thankful for the opportunity to captain the side and the game was great.

“East Oxford fought right to the end, pressing and putting a shift in. Every single one of their players worked hard and credit to them for that and for getting this far in the competition.

The U’s now quickly turn their focus to a massive first versus second clash against Watford Women at Vicarage Road on Thursday night.

They’ll need the travelling Yellow Army in full support to help them earn a title defining three points under the lights.

Tickets can be bought online HERE or on the gate, or by calling the ticket office at 01923223023. Fans buying tickets online will need to create a fan ID through Watford's website.
