Boss Karl Robinson was in reflective mood after his side bowed out of the play-offs at Blackpool on Friday night.
“It just wasn’t to be for us” he told iFollow. “We said all the positive things but we lost it in the first game.
"The whole tie was crazy. They scored four goals in five and a half minutes and that is sickening but I think we were short in physicality all over the pitch. Losing Sam Long was a big blow to us, Marcus McGuane adds it for us and I think tonight their absence was a little bit more evident, as they have been in some of the bigger games this season. We just fell short.
“We know what we have to work on now. The season is gone and we thank the players who have worked wonderfully hard all year. We shouldn’t even be here for the play-offs, we exceeded all expectations.
“I want to thank the fans for the way they got behind us but I don’t think they would have believed we would have two play-off campaigns in a row like this. We wish Blackpool luck: we fought them for everything but we are also really honest as a football club and they were the better team over two legs.
“I’m proud of my players, proud of my football club. These players are special people. There is no arrogance, they are just good people but on the night we just fell short as a team.”
