Karl Robinson was all smiles after his side put in a convincing performance to beat Doncaster Rovers 3-0 at the Kassam Stadium last night.
Two goals from Matty Taylor and a neatly taken goal from Mide Shodipo eased the U’s past their fellow play-off chasing visitors and left Karl in a very positive frame of mind when he spoke to iFollow after the game:
“I thought we were hugely impressive when you consider we were playing a team ahead of us today” he said.” I thought it was a class performance with real aggression. We left holes in behind us because we felt it was the right thing to do and we played with the handbrake off.
“We spoke about the level of intensity we needed and to do it with seven of our squad out injured or unavailable and still play with that energy was excellent. We were almost like kids on the playground; that may make me look like a terrible coach! But we looked like we were playing just for the love of playing football. We were relaxed but we were also aggressive in wanting to win the game as well.
“We’ve played really well against teams in the top six recently: Portsmouth, Peterborough, Ipswich and for 60 minutes at Hull on Saturday so we took confidence from that and then, making the changes we did in the second half leaves some energy in the legs for Saturday.
"We are in the mix again and that’s incredible with the big clubs in this division. But we are putting ourselves in that bracket year in year out now. Everyone in the building has upped their game and the players have found an extra gear as well.
“I thought we were great to watch tonight but we kept it tight at the back as well so I am really pleased. Now we are set up nicely for the last dozen or so games of the season. It’s going to be a really exciting end to the season.”
