RIP Mick Vinter

Oxford United are saddened to hear of the death of our former striker Mick Vinter.

Mick was part of United’s rise up the leagues under Jim Smith, his Manager at Boston United earlier in his career, and was part of our Division 3 title winning side in 1983/84 after arriving from Notts County in 1982.

In total he scored 14 goals in 53 appearances before joining Mansfield Town, where he continued to live in a nursing home while fighting illness with his customary bravery.

Mick was 65 and our thoughts are with his family. Malcolm Shotton captained the side when Mick was with the club and told us

“Mick was an important part of the jigsaw for us. Jim brought in four or five really good experienced players and the likes of Mick, Steve Biggins and Neil Whatmore gave us a bit of know-how up front. He was a good player but also we all got on so well and spent so much time together so it’s a really sad day for all of us.”
