With the new season now firnly on the horizon Oxford United’s players have been out and about meeting season ticket holders and young fans as they prepare for the big kick off.
It came after Head Coach Karl Robinson mused in an interview that it would be good for players to deliver season tickets and make contact with fans, provided it was socially distanced and safe to do so.
With close to 4,000 season tickets sold for the new campaign we prioritised young fans and over the weekend each player in the first team squad was given four special packs to deliver around Oxford, including a backpack, scarf and other gifts, a small thank you to young supporters.
The response has been amazing and the players have loved meeting the supporters.
Matty Taylor told us “It was good fun and the reaction we got was incredible.” while captain Rob Dickie said “I went along with James Henry and we did ours together - four on Friday four on Saturday on the way in to games. We weren’t quite sure what to expect but people seemed to want to chat and are really looking forward to the games coming up- it will be great when we can have them all back in the stands and watching us.”
There have been some amazing stories over the last few days. Alex Gorrin, as usual, went the extra mile...
“I went to the address I was given but they told me the people had moved. So I went on to the next one but rang the family just to say how sorry I was to miss them. They called back and sounded sad that we missed each other so I told them to go back to their old house, waited for them and finally we got to meet! It was good to make that connection and sparing a few minutes to meet our amazing fans is the least we can do right now.”
There was also one very moving visit where Sam Long dropped in on a family where one young fan is fighting against illness right now. The family sent us an emotional thank you and Sam has arranged for the whole family to come and visit us at the Training Ground the moment it is safe to do so.
We thank all of the fans we visited and can only apologise to those we couldn’t get to- the players covered hundreds of miles all across Oxfordshire and loved meeting everyone. We look forward to the day we are all reunited.
Be part of the Yellow Army. Season Ticket holders will be the first to come back and join us this season and there are great prices for young fans.
