Oxford United were back to earth straight away this morning after a fantastic win over West Ham in the Carabao Cup last night.
Karl Robinson’s squad, fresh from a 4-0 win over the Hammers quickly switched their attention to facing Gillingham in the league on Saturday, as Karl told iFollow:
“It was fantastic for all the players and for the fans as well. It was good to see the celebrations and it will go down as one of the best nights at the stadium, but also it keeps that nice run of ours going at home which is important. It is in the record books now but it won’t define the future and if I was Steve Evans I would be looking at it with a bit of a wry smile thinking the opposition might get carried away with themselves and that my team is fresh because they have had a free week.
“Now we have to press the normal button and go and perform professionally.
“I was very pleased with the players and some of the things that were said in the dressing room afterwards and then we came in this morning and it was like nothing had happened. Nobody mentioned it too much. We did our work, we had our meetings and we moved on.
“We made a lot of changes so we will be fresh and some of the players who we rested will be frustrated that they didn’t play after the result.”
“The fans can help us on Saturday. I openly said that from afar you don’t really appreciate the support we get until you immerse yourself in it. Home and away the fans who come on a regular basis support us wonderfully well. You are always going to get criticised for something or other but the fans make it so good to play in front of them and maybe they don’t appreciate the effect they can have on a performance and a win like the West Ham game.
“I have always said that we are only passing through but it is their club and we have to treat it with the respect they would expect from us and hopefully they will come back on Saturday to help us once again because we have the opportunity to add to two great performances earlier in the week.”
