Oxford United’s ‘Virtual XI’ goes from strength to strength with the U’s attracting players from all over the world.
This season has seen United enter the world of online leagues with players from across the globe taking parts in trials and then playing in teams representing the U’s in official leagues.
The first team have a new manager, Jonas Jensen, from Denmark who has a very good reputation in the vpg world and has won many leagues. Jonas and his team are doing well in the the esports Premier League, one of the toughest leagues in VPG and there is a cosmopolitan feel to the team with five Danish players currently playing for the U’s!
With a cap of five players from any one country in the senior team, to ensure that United are open to all players, the Oxford United Academy team has a more local feel with Gavin Buckett, a dedicated United supporter, leading the team which also features fans Dominic Wade, Aiden Murry, Connor Casey, Conor Murphy, Daniel Leggett, Jack Kerry, Joe Teal, Josh Grant, Jake Furminger, Cameron Poulter and Neil Purves.
Gavin told us
“I'm hoping to get more Oxford fans involved as the team develops, but we held open trials and people from all over the world joined in and the standard was exceptional. We are talking to the club about an Oxford United esports day at a game because all of the players get on really well, there is a real community spirit to playing the games and it would be good for us all to meet up. The challenge is out there to Karl Robinson and his team if they want to get online and take us on!
“We are in League 4 this season and currently top of the table so we will be looking for the title this season. But we are always happy to hear from any other gamers and players who think they would like to represent Oxford United.”
If you would like to get involved then check out the team's twitter pages: all levels welcome.
