Last May the Oxford United Walking Football Club for the over-50 age group of players was launched. They have weekly sessions which are played on the new 3G pitches at the Academy, Sandy Lane West, Littlemore and regularly have over 20 players.
One of the aims of the club is to provide football of a competitive nature for those who wish to compete in league matches and tournaments. The team’s success in their first year in the Thames Valley League has been amazing, with the A team winning the B Division and the B team just missing out on promotion in the C Division. Recently, they took a team to their first overseas tournament in Portugal.
This ended in a very creditable result, winning the second tier cup!
However, the club also welcomes players who just wish to play for fun and some players may find it hard to keep up with the faster walking element of the game.
Therefore, they are now thinking of starting a slower walking football weekly session, with no physical contact for less-mobile players.
The weekly session would likely be held on a Saturday morning and you would need a pair of astro football boots. Based on how many people are interested, there will be a free session for people to try on a date that will be decided in the near future.
