Former Coventry centre back joins the U’s
On Friday Oxford United signed centre back Aaron Martin, previously with Coventry City.
The 6’3” 26-year-old defender signed a two-year deal with the U’s, after playing 32 games for the Sky Blues last season.
Martin joined Coventry, initially on loan, from Yeovil Town in January 2015. After starting his career with Eastleigh, Martin spent five years with Southampton, helping the club to successive promotions from League One to the Premier League, although he didn’t play for the Saints in the top flight. Loan spells with Crystal Palace and Coventry followed before he signed a short-term deal with Birmingham City prior to his move to Yeovil.
After his release by Coventry, City manager Tony Mowbray said: ““It was a tough decision – probably the toughest decision of them all I’d have to say because he has done everything I have asked of him.”
Martin told oufc.co.uk: “I’ve seen the way Oxford play and I think the club could have a very good chance in League One.
"Everyone has seen how well the club’s done and I think that’s testament to what the gaffer’s done and the football he’s got them playing and the belief around the club. We just need to use that momentum to go again.”
Michael Appleton said: “He’s got good experience of this division judging by the amount of games he played for Coventry. You’ve only got to look at his physical attributes – he’s a big lad but he’s a good footballer, he’ll be a threat in both boxes and with the games he played last year in a side that was near the top of the division surely he’ll be an asset for us.”
