Golf Day A Great Success

Golf Day well above par

This week saw Oxford United hold their annual Golf Day at the prestigious Oxfordshire Golf Club.

The well attended event, kindly sponsored by Clifford Thames, was fiercely contested on a glorious autumnal day, although the chill in the air when the sun was covered by clouds made Alex MacDonald regret his decision to wear shorts!

The individual competition couldn’t have been closer, with the top three all being tied on 41 points. After a countback on the back six holes, the top three were as follows:

1st Place – Bank Kennedy, SCM Group
2nd Place – Sam Slocombe playing for Clifford Thames
3rd Place – Darryl Eales, Team Eales

The United Players’ Team of Callum O’Dowda, Sam Long and Freddie Grant  didn’t fare well under the stewardship of Peter Rhoades-Brown but the other club teams performed much better, both finishing in the top three. Here’s how the top three teams lined up:

1st Place – Team Eales made up of Darryl Eales, Stuart Mills, Paul Hayward and David Jones with a score of 95 points.
2nd Place – OUFC Management containing Michael Appleton, Darek Fazackerley, Scott Daly and Dan Bond scoring 89 points.
3rd Place – Oxford Mail with a score of 89 points, losing out on a countback on the back 9. Chris Moore, David May, Gary Timms and Andy Griffin.

Director and member of ‘Team Eales’, David Jones was the nearest the pin on the front nine. Nearest the pin on the back nine was Michael Gorman from the Oxford & District Building Services team.

Following the competition, the guests enjoyed a three-course meal overlooking the course, with entertainment provided by Russ Williams.  David Jones also took to the stage to host some interesting question and answer sessions with Sam Slocombe, Callum O’Dowda, and Michael Appleton and Derek Fazackerley.

Calvin Barnett from Clifford Thames was joined by Michael Appleton in presenting the awards. Chairman Darryl Eales who picked up a couple of trophies on the day, then closed the event in thanking everyone for taking part.

Thank you to The Oxfordshire for putting on an excellent event, the course and food were excellent. Thanks again to the event sponsor Clifford Thames and to everyone who took part in this event.
