We know what we have to do says Appleton
Oxford United welcome Carlisle United on Saturday looking to get back to winning ways. Defeats against Hartlepool and Shrewsbury have dragged United back towards the pack at the foot of the table and with eight games left the U’s need to show their true colours on Military Day at the Kassam Stadium.
The U’s were a little unfortunate when losing to second-placed Shrewsbury on Saturday:
“It was frustrating because I thought we played well on the day” said Head Coach Michael Appleton. “Obviously after the disappointment of conceding in the first minute or so we responded in the right way and we dominated the game really but lacked a killer touch. We have to find a way of scoring goals and converting those chances.”
The United boss knows that Saturday has now become an even bigger game for his side as they take on a Carlisle side just one place and two points behind them.
“There’s no doubt we have some massive games coming up” Michael said “I’m not trying to make excuses or hide, but I’d far rather have the performance that we put in at Shrewsbury going into the remaining eight games instead of two heavy defeats and not looking like scoring or winning. Things can change quickly; moods, confidence things like that can all change.
“We have big games coming up and they don’t need talking up. The players know it, everyone knows it, so it’s just a case of refocussing and making sure we are fully prepared for the game and what is expected.”
