Baldock and Appleton pay tribute to the travelling fans
The Oxford United fans were the real winners as the U’s drew 0-0 with SC Wiener Neustadt in Austria last night. Around 200 travelling fans turned the game into a yellow and blue carnival as they got behind Michael Appleton’s new-look side. There were amazing scenes both at the game and in the town before and after the game as the Yellow Army showed its true colours.
“It was incredible” Michael told Yellow Player HD afterwards. “It felt like a proper European cup tie and I can’t thank the fans enough.
“For some of those young lads in the team it was a fantastic game for experience and I thought it was a great evening. The game was competitive, as we wanted. Both sides went at it the right way and we learned plenty tonight. Our hosts have a cup tie on Friday and are that much further down the line than us in terms of preparation, but we played well and hopefully the fans enjoyed the match as well as the whole day.”
After the game the players and staff joined fans in the town and as George Baldock said, it was a night that few people will forget:
“It was unbelievable” he said. “We knew there would be a lot of fans out here but the reception we got and the support was way beyond expectation. I’ll certainly remember this evening for a long time; I took a few pictures of it to show my family because it was brilliant and that’s only pre-season. I can’t wait to see what it will be like when we are involved in big games this season.”
