Pre-season starts with RAF test for the U's
The Oxford United first team squad headed for RAF Benson today for the first part of a two day training camp.
There was an 8am start for the U’s as they made the short trip to Benson where they were put through their paces in an early drill session before they set up their overnight accommodation- five tents that will house the players and staff for the night.
After a light lunch the players then competed in a series of tests designed to highlight their leadership qualities before a more strenuous physical workout to end the afternoon. There will be no let up tomorrow for the players as they embark on a second day of exercises, with the Sky TV cameras due to cover the morning session…
Head Coach Michael Appleton said:
“It was an excellent first day. There was immediate respect from the players as soon as we arrived on the base because we all appreciate the great work that goes on at RAF Benson day to day.
“I have been on a few pre-seasons where the players have gone to military bases and run and run over assault courses in the heat and although there will be plenty of physical work for them we also wanted to give them other challenges and make them think. It has been interesting to see who are the leaders and who are the followers.
“It has also allowed the new boys to settle straight in and be part of the group, so it has been good and we are looking forward to tomorrow now.”
Our thanks to RAF Benson for their hospitality.
There is a fascinating interview with Michael in Yellow Player right now: can you have too many leaders in a squad? See what he says as we go behind the scenes at Boot Camp.
