Youth Team Stay Top

Hackett goal gives Oxford United under 18s victory over Plymouth Argyle

United’s under 18s stayed top of the table with a 1-0 win over Plymouth Argyle on Saturday. A fine individual goal from Greg Hackett gave Chris Allen’s youth side a vital win and Chris told us:

“All the games at the moment are pretty close and this was the same story. Earlier in the season we were scoring goals and the wins were a bit more comfortable but at the moment the goals are proving harder to come by and so the games are that bit tighter. That’s unusual for us as the front line have been firing all season and done really well.

“We are still getting into some great positions and putting decent delivery into the box – Freddie Grant did that a number of times in this game – but we haven’t been able to capitalise on them. On Saturday it took a really good goal from Greg Hackett to win the game. He picked the ball up and dribbled in from the right then beat two or three players and slotted the ball into the bottom corner for an excellent goal.

“That was enough to win the game and is another contender for our Goal of the Season competition. Greg did really well all game and deserved that goal.

“That leaves us top  and it’s between us and Bristol Rovers, maybe with Exeter in with a shout as well. Rovers have games in hand, like they did last season, but we have taken it to the last game against them for the second season in a row; we have to win it and then rely on them dropping points in their other games. We will go there and give it our all as we always do.”
